Features and
Habits
In terms of dimensions, it has a length of 14 cm and a wingspan between 23 and 27 cm. Regarding its characteristics, the most notable aspects are, concerning its plumage, its bluish color on the upper part with a black stripe in the eye area and white or orange on the lower part. However, its most admirable characteristic is the fact that it clings to tree trunks, climbing up and down them, as if scaling. In addition to this aspect, it also has a robust and long beak, well adapted to its diet.
Regarding its diet, it uses its beak to break open both wood in search of insects and hard seeds. During the breeding season, between April and June, the species nests in tree cavities, often in old woodpecker nests. It lines the nest with pieces of tree bark, dry leaves, and feathers. The female lays between 5 and 9 eggs, which are incubated for 14 to 16 days. After the chicks hatch, both parents feed them for 20 to 24 days. At the end of these days, the new birds are ready to leave the nest, however, they are fed by their parents for a few more weeks.
Habitat and Distribution
It is a common resident bird (present throughout the year) across the entire territory, although it is less common in sparsely forested areas of the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Its habitats are primarily well-developed woodlands, such as cork oak, holm oak, or oak forests, but it also appears in pine forests. One of the areas in the country where the species has been most frequently sighted is the Sado estuary.
