In terms of size, it has a length of 19 to 21 cm and a wingspan of 38 to 41 cm. Its most notable characteristics are its brownish upperparts and white lowerparts, white eye markings, and a lighter line above the eyes. It also has a long beak, suitable for searching for food on the ground.
It feeds on crustaceans, insects, and other invertebrates. This species generally does not fly in large flocks. It nests near water, making nests in plant-lined holes amidst the vegetation. Around 4 eggs are laid. Incubation lasts about 21 days.
Habitat e Distribuição
It is a common resident bird, found in Portugal throughout the year, in the more inland regions of the country. It is also, and especially, a common wintering bird, with many individuals found in Portugal during winter, particularly on the coast. It prefers aquatic habitats such as estuaries, salt marshes, lagoons, reservoirs, rivers, and streams. The area of the country where it is most observed is the Tagus estuary; however, it is also frequently seen in the Algarve, the Aveiro lagoon, and the Mondego River. From August to October, at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, there are a greater number of individuals due to migratory passage. During the breeding season, it is scarce and is more frequently sighted inland, unlike the rest of the year. It nests in inland streams or even dams.
