Características e
Hábitos

In terms of size, it has a length of 100 to 115 cm and a wingspan of 155 to 165 cm. Its most notable characteristics are its long, red legs and beak, as well as its mostly white plumage with black parts on its wings. It flies with its neck outstretched, unlike herons.

It feeds on small fish, amphibians, reptiles, and even small mammals and birds, but mainly crayfish. In terms of nesting, something quite characteristic of this species is the location of its nests on posts and buildings, although it also builds them in trees. These nests are structures made of branches and can be used for several years. Usually 4 eggs are laid, which take 1 month to hatch.

Habitat e Distribuição

It is a common resident bird, found in Portugal throughout the year, generally along the coast and border, but especially in the southern region of the country. Its habitat consists of agricultural land, wetlands, and estuaries. It avoids densely forested areas. The area of the country where this species is most easily observed is the Tagus estuary, but it is also possible to see them in significant numbers in the Mondego estuary, Algarve, Alentejo, and Ria de Aveiro. Around summer and autumn, the number of storks decreases, as many individuals migrate to Africa.
