In terms of size, it has a length of approximately 15 cm and a wingspan between 25 and 29 cm. Regarding its characteristics, the plumage between males and females is quite different. In the case of the male, the chest and face are reddish and it has a grayish cap. Females do not have this characteristic; however, in both sexes, the body is brownish and they have a white patch on the wings. Juveniles are also brownish like the females.

They feed mainly on seeds and occasionally some insects and caterpillars during the breeding season. They reproduce in spring and summer, and the nests are made in forests. They lay between 4 and 5 eggs which hatch in about 13 days. After hatching, they remain under the care of their parents for a few weeks.

Habitat and Distribution
 

It is a common resident bird (found in the country throughout the year). It is sighted throughout the country, however, more frequently in the north. It is most often observed in wooded habitats, such as various types of forests and parks and gardens. In winter it is also observed in agricultural fields. The area of the country where there are the most sightings is in regions along the Mondego River. In autumn and winter there is an increase in the number of individuals due to migration from northern Europe.
